The Decision That Changed Everything: Why We Chose Homeschooling

Four years ago, I panicked.

My oldest was five years old, and I did what I thought I was supposed to do — I registered him for Grade 1 at public school.

Because that’s what everyone does… right?

At the time, homeschooling wasn’t really part of the plan. Like so many parents, I followed the path that felt expected. School registration happened, supplies started crossing my mind, and I tried to convince myself I felt excited.

But deep down, something didn’t sit right.

A few weeks before school was supposed to start, I looked at my husband and said words that completely changed the direction of our lives:

“I can’t do it.”

It wasn’t about public school being wrong. It wasn’t fear or distrust, maybe a little…

It was something much simpler.

I couldn’t imagine someone else spending all day with my child.

Watching him learn.

Watching him struggle and figure things out.

Watching him discover new interests.

Watching him grow into who he was becoming.

And feeling like I was missing it.

The decision to homeschool didn’t come without worry. There were questions. Doubts. Conversations that stretched late into the night.

Would we do enough?

Would our kids miss out?

What would other people think?

Because homeschooling isn’t exactly considered “normal” by everyone.

And stepping outside what feels expected can feel really uncomfortable.

It took some convincing. It took trust. It took choosing what felt right for our family over what felt familiar.

But four years later, I can honestly say this:

I would never change it for the world.

Homeschooling has challenged me in ways I never expected. Some days are messy. Some days feel long. Some days leave me questioning everything.

But there has also been so much beauty.

Slow mornings.

Learning together.

Watching curiosity unfold naturally.

Getting a front-row seat to childhood.

Time.

So much time.

And I will never regret choosing more time.

When we first started homeschooling, our classroom lived in a tiny space that I was incredibly proud of. I poured my heart into creating a place where learning could happen — the shelves were empty but supplies ready, excitement overflowing.

At the time, I thought it was perfect.

But like homeschooling itself, our space has evolved.

Over the last four years, our classroom has moved and changed more times than I can count. We’ve learned what works, what doesn’t, and how to make learning fit our family instead of trying to force our family to fit learning.

Today, our homeschool space lives in our bonus room.

And honestly?

It’s my favourite room in the house.

It holds so much more than supplies, books, books and more books.

It holds memories.

Growth.

Hard days.

Beautiful days.

And the reminder that sometimes the decisions that scare us the most end up changing our lives for the better.

I can’t wait to show you what our homeschool space looks like now.
